If there’s one thing that brings motors to mind – it’s the name Ford. We know Ford because of cars, because of technology, because of design, creativity, and ingenuity. We know Ford because of competitive cars, great concepts, power, and innovation. From the roaring power of the Mustang to the transport efficiency of the Galaxy, if there’s one name in cars to pay attention to – it’s Ford. It’s always been that way though and for good reason.
Ford? It’s the Ford Motor Company, and it borrows it’s name from its founder – Henry Ford. Henry Ford was an innovator in cars, but also in sociology, business and industry. Ford was a leading light, and that is something that the name connotes. When we think of Ford, we think of cars. That’s the goal of good marketing working right there.
Now, there are much bigger names in the industry than Ford, but Ford still steals the limelight, and that might be something to do with its branding. General Motors are bigger – and Dodge certainly steal the ‘power’ throne, but it is Ford that is perhaps the most well-known. General Motors suffers from being a holding company – it’s children, like the Chevy are more familiar. This is an issue that Ford doesn’t have.
Henry Ford changed the world – for good it can be argued. His concept of Fordism (producing cheap goods while paying workers good wages) was highly valued by workers on the production lines – and is something that could have dealt the rise of communism in the West a vicious blow; so you can certainly color him as an All-American Hero. This stemmed from his support of the idea of production lines, mass-assembly and other modern day crutches of production. Fordism fell away, mostly, but it’s impact gave the world mass consumerism. For something borne of a car company, that’s big news and puts Ford in front not just in cars, but also on a sociological level as well. Has any other company had as a big an impact as Ford? Arguably, yes. If we look to the east, we can see the rise of Toyota, Kia, Hyundai and Nissan. Grouping together, these manufacturers relish the concept of Fordism and how it led the way for car manufacturers around the world – but they add their own twist; efficiency that might not be found in Western manufacturers.Ford’s cars are also recognizable. Ford has a motor for all sorts of uses. The Mustang is built from the ground up for power – but what about the Toyota Celica? While Ford is the most recognizable name in the industry, we might hear names like Kia, Hyundai and even Dacha on the tips of western tongues, and within fifty years, they might steal Ford’s crown. Who knows? For impact, the power and sociological might of Ford and GM cannot be denied, but times do change. We shall see!
