There are plenty of “hot” hatchbacks that you can buy these days. One of the best ones on the market happens to be the Mercedes Benz A Class AMG. It’s a high-performance car that is based on the standard A-Class model.

If you’ve got a family in tow, you will doubtless want a car that can accommodate them. The good news is that, thanks to this car, you no longer have to drive dull people carriers! The A-Class AMG is one of those family vehicles that tick all the boxes. Safety, comfort, refinement and performance.

Are you looking for a new family car? Want something that looks stunning and has high performance under the bonnet? Answer yes to both of those questions, and you will find yourself adding the A-Class AMG to your shortlist. Here are some reasons why you need to put this model at the top of the list:

It offers phenomenal performance

There’s just one engine and transmission choice on the Mercedes-Benz A-Class AMG. And, let me tell you; it’s a good one! The car comes with a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine as standard. It’s a direct-injected unit, and we all know how direction injection increases fuel efficiency!

The Mercedes-Benz A-Class AMG will get you from zero to 60 mph in a mere 4.5 seconds. That’s faster than an Aston Martin DB9 and a Bentley Mulsanne Speed! It has a limited top speed of 155 mph, although I doubt you will want to drive faster than the speed limit on your roads for obvious reasons!

Those of you concerned with fuel economy will find the car a delight as it offers 40 mpg combined. CO2 emissions are just 161 g/km; a useful fact to know if your car tax is charged by how green it is. Oh, and did I mention that the car comes with 354 brake horsepower as standard?

Bolted to the engine is a seven-speed automatic transmission. Technically it’s a semi-automatic because you can change gears manually. Albeit without the need for a clutch pedal. The Mercedes-Benz A-Class AMG also has steering wheel paddles, so you don’t need to shift using the gear lever.

Three driving modes

It’s no secret that the Mercedes-Benz A-Class AMG is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Its practical size and contours help it blend in well with town and city environments. But lurking underneath that slick exterior is a monstrous beating heart, ready to take on any worthy adversary!

You already know just how powerful the engine is in this car. But, did you know that it offers motorists three driving modes? Let me explain. Because this is a race-inspired car, it lets you choose the best mode for the driving situation you are in.

The first of the three modes is “C” – comfort. This is the standard, default mode, and the one that you will be using for everyday driving. It offers a blend of performance and fuel economy; ideal for all urban driving environments.

The second mode is “M” – manual. It lets drivers have total control over the AMG and is suited to people that prefer a more spirited drive each day. As you can imagine, it’s not the most economical of operating modes. But that’s not what the manual mode is about! With manual mode, you use the paddle shifters to change gear.

Last, but not least, there is the third mode: “S” – sport. This is the mode you would choose when you want maximum performance out of the engine!

Selecting the sport mode “unleashes the beast” as it were. If you were taking the AMG out on a quarter-mile drag strip, sport mode would undoubtedly be the best choice for the job.

Handles like a go-kart

I’ve had the pleasure of driving plenty of high-performance cars over the years. And, I have to say, the Mercedes-Benz A-Class AMG is a car whose handling impresses me the most! It comes with an all-wheel drive system as standard.

Coupled with a low centre of gravity and large, wide wheels, the car handles well even in extreme driving conditions. It offers plenty of grip and will never let you down when you need to rely on it the most.

The brilliant thing about the handling of this car is that you can customise the ride quality. It has an adjustable traction control system with three different modes. By default, it offers total protection against wheel slip. “Sport” mode allows for a bit of wheel slippage before the car’s electronics take over.

Finally, if you press and hold the button down, you can disable the system temporarily. This mode is suited to expert drivers only!

You can buy them on the used car market

The Mercedes-Benz A-Class AMG first got launched back in 2013. That means there are used models available through sites like motorlinedirect.co.uk. Of course, if you wait another year, there will be plenty more choice as most leases on the car will have finished.

That means you can end up paying a lot less for such a high-performance vehicle. All without worrying about depreciation and purchase prices!

Looks brilliant on the outside

The exterior of the A-Class AMG includes a body kit, heated power mirrors and bi-Xenon headlights. LED rear lights and a sports exhaust also finish off the styling of the car. The 18-inch alloy wheels are a perfect match for the car and are quite stylish too.

It’s even better on the inside

As standard, the interior of the AMG comes with tinted rear windows, sports seats and power windows. The styling is very much sports-oriented, yet it has the practicality of a modern family car.

There is a plethora of features and goodies that come with the car as standard. The good news is there’s only one trim level to choose, so you don’t have to worry about which one is best for you. ISOFIX anchors on the rear seats of the AMG mean you can fit baby seats without any hassle.
